The right home EV charger should match your vehicle, parking space and electrical installation before you compare apps or headline charging speeds. This US buying guide helps you build a practical shortlist and get comparable installation quotes.
Quick takeaway: choose the connector first, calculate the energy you need during your charging window, then compare total installed cost. The most powerful unit is not automatically the best purchase.
The options below cover portable, plug-in and hardwired charging, with different connectors and energy-management features. For deeper software and energy-management differences, see our smart-charger feature comparison.
Start With the Vehicle and Connector
Confirm the connector on your exact vehicle and its maximum AC charging rate. A charging station’s rating, the circuit rating and the car’s charging limit are different numbers. The slowest applicable limit determines the achievable rate.
For a mixed household, consider supported J1772 and NACS options rather than assuming all non-Tesla vehicles use one connector. Use only adapters approved for the equipment and vehicle.
Home Charger Configurations Compared
| Product family | Documented US configuration | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Tesla Wall Connector (NACS) | Up to 48A / 11.5kW; NACS connector, no integrated J1772 adapter | Exact version and vehicle’s AC limit |
| Emporia Classic / Pro | Up to 48A hardwired or 40A plug-in | Pro includes the Vue monitor; Classic package differs |
| ChargePoint Home Flex | Up to 50A hardwired or 40A plug-in; J1772/NACS options | Connector, plug type and installation requirements |
| Wallbox Pulsar Plus | 40A and 48A versions | Exact connector; meter cost for advanced energy management |
| Grizzl-E Classic Connect | 40A; 9.6kW at 240V; J1772/NACS options | Current Connect model versus older Smart listings |
| Tesla Mobile Connector | Up to 32A on a suitable 240V supply | Approved outlet, adapter and available charging hours |
| Autel AC Lite 40A | NEMA 14-50 plug-in; up to 40A / 9.6kW; 25-ft J1772 cable | Suitable circuit and receptacle; Tesla needs a compatible J1772 AC adapter |
| Autel AC Elite 50A β separate holster | Hardwired; up to 50A / 12kW; 25-ft J1772 cable | Vehicle AC limit, installation and any load-management accessories; Tesla adapter required |
These are equipment limits, not guaranteed vehicle charging speeds. Confirm the precise configuration in the current installation manual and seller listing.
Compare the Autel AC Lite 40A plug-in charger and AC Elite 50A hardwired charger in our US Gear selection. Both selected versions use J1772, so a compatible Tesla adapter is required.
Work Out How Much Charging You Need
Use your actual driving consumption and charging records when available. As a hypothetical example, 40 miles at 0.30kWh per mile uses 12kWh in the vehicle. At an assumed 90% charging efficiency, replacing that energy requires about 13.3kWh from the wall. Over an eight-hour window, the average requirement is about 1.7kW.
That example is not a guarantee for winter use, every Tesla or a nearly empty battery. Leave capacity for seasonal variation, extra trips and any shorter off-peak window. Buying a higher-output charger cannot overcome the car’s own AC limit.
Compare Plug-In and Hardwired Quotes
A suitable existing outlet can make a portable or plug-in charger economical. A new outlet still needs an appropriate circuit and installation; it is not automatically cheaper than hardwiring. Ask your installer to compare both paths for your specific equipment and location.
- Panel capacity, cable run and required electrical work.
- Outdoor location, enclosure and cable routing.
- Permits, inspection and commissioning.
- Load-management hardware where appropriate.
- Space and capacity for another EV if it is part of your actual plan.

Pay for Features You Will Use
Autel AC Lite and AC Elite offer app scheduling, charging activity and optional RFID access. The Lite 40A uses a NEMA 14-50 plug; the Elite 50A here is hardwired with a separate holster. Budget for any required adapter and load-management equipment.
Vehicle scheduling may already cover a simple overnight routine. Charger energy history can help reconcile bills; whole-home measurement and dynamic power management serve different purposes. Check required accessories before comparing prices.
Tesla provides charging history through its app, Emporia offers monitor-based energy management, ChargePoint brings home and public charging into its app, Wallbox offers meter-based load and solar functions, and current Grizzl-E Connect models offer connected control. Compare specific functions rather than a blanket βsmartβ label.

US incentive timing checked October 16, 2026: Confirm your service territory, installation date and exact equipment before including a rebate or utility payment. The federal Section 30C credit does not apply to equipment placed in service after June 30, 2026. See the IRS eligibility rules. No unconfirmed incentive is included in the recommendations.
