Tesla’s cabin camera helps monitor driver attention. An age-estimation system could serve a different purpose, but the claim that software 2026.8.6 introduced one is not established by the official documentation reviewed here. Owners should not rely on the camera to identify an underage driver or automatically apply age-specific restrictions.
What Tesla documents for owner vehicles
The Model Y cabin-camera guide describes inattentiveness detection and says the camera does not perform facial recognition or identity verification. It does not document the proposed age-verification feature.
Age estimation and identity verification are different technical claims. Neither a code reference nor an age-related riding rule would, by itself, establish an enabled feature, its accuracy or how it changes driving behaviour.
Use the controls your vehicle actually provides
For families, Tesla already documents Parental Controls that can limit speed, reduce acceleration and require supported safety features. Availability varies by vehicle. These settings require deliberate setup; they should not be described as an automatic response to a face or estimated age.
Check your own manual and configure the controls while parked. They support responsible supervision and access decisions; they do not establish that the person holding a key is licensed or permitted to drive.
Review privacy settings without blocking safety features
Tesla’s cabin-camera guide says images and video remain in the vehicle by default unless data sharing is enabled, and describes sharing for safety events and diagnostics. Review Controls → Software → Data Sharing and the cabin-camera settings in your vehicle.
The same guide directs owners to keep the lens unobstructed. Blocking a camera needed by driver-monitoring features is not a substitute for choosing privacy settings.
Robotaxi has separate rider rules and a separate privacy notice, including different early-access provisions. Do not transfer those rules to a personally owned car or assume they prove automated age checks. Treat age estimation as unverified until Tesla explains the feature and its limits.
Correction: The earlier age-based safety assurance was not substantiated, and the camera-cover recommendation has been removed because it conflicts with Tesla’s unobstructed-lens guidance.
