The Model Y L gives families a different choice from adding a third row to the shorter Model Y: a longer wheelbase and six seats arranged across three rows. The useful comparison is passenger room and luggage space with everyone aboard—not just the maximum cargo figure with seats folded.
Updated October 16, 2026: Tesla’s United States Model Y page now lists Model Y L Premium with six seats and 332 miles of EPA-estimated range. Canadian availability and specifications need their own check.
The extra length makes a measurable difference
Tesla’s U.S. owner’s manual provides these approximate measurements for the current versions:
| Measurement | Model Y Premium, seven seats | Model Y L, six seats |
|---|---|---|
| Overall length | 4,790 mm | 4,969 mm |
| Wheelbase | 2,890 mm | 3,040 mm |
| Third-row legroom | 656 mm | 788 mm |
| Cargo behind the third row | 370 litres | 420 litres |
The L adds 150 mm of wheelbase and about 179 mm of overall length in this comparison. Its 2-2-2 seating layout changes how passengers reach and use the third row. Tesla’s U.S. six-seat manual describes two individual second-row seats with their own adjustments and armrests.
Those dimensions support the claim of more space, but comfort is personal. Try the third row with the people who will use it, check child-seat access and load the stroller or luggage you normally carry. A six-seat vehicle also has one fewer belted position than a seven-seat configuration.
Use the range and price for your own market
Compare a local offer with the rating for the vehicle you can buy. WLTP and EPA figures use different test procedures; one should not be presented as a prediction of the other.
Use the applicable EPA or other local rating as a comparison figure, then allow for the weather, speed, passengers and load on your trips. A currency conversion cannot establish the United States or Canadian purchase price after local equipment, taxes and fees.
Plan around the actual cabin layout
Check garage length and liftgate clearance as well as passenger space. For mats or cargo protection, confirm the exact Model Y L seating layout and model year; do not assume products shaped for the shorter five- or seven-seat Model Y will fit.
The best reason to choose the L is that its seating and cargo arrangement works for your family. Compare it with the shorter Model Y in person and keep the extra room, reduced seat count and total cost in the same decision.
The retractable roof sunshade and rear-console storage box are options for the Model Y L Premium. They are not universal five-seat Model Y accessories; check the exact vehicle and selected version.
