A Tesla leaving an Ontario HOV lane is not, by itself, evidence that the lane is illegal to use or that the car has found a faster route. Check the active driving feature, HOV preference and upcoming exit before drawing a conclusion. A description of one lane change is not enough to diagnose its cause.
Check permission to use the lane first
Ontario’s provincial-highway guidance permits vehicles with Ontario green licence plates to use HOV lanes regardless of the number of occupants. Other vehicles may need to meet the occupancy rules. Confirm the signs for the road you are actually using; a provincial-highway exemption is not a blanket rule for every municipal lane.
Use the official Ontario HOV lane guidance and Green Licence Plate Program. Eligibility does not authorize crossing the striped buffer: enter or leave at the designated openings. Ontario notes that you may need to leave the HOV lane several kilometres before your highway exit.
Identify which Tesla feature is active
Ordinary navigation, Autosteer, Navigate on Autosteer and Full Self-Driving (Supervised) do not make identical lane choices. A route on the screen does not mean the car is steering, and an Autosteer setting is not automatically an FSD setting.
Tesla’s Canadian Autosteer manual distinguishes lane keeping from the route-based and speed-based lane changes available with Navigate on Autosteer. Availability and menu names depend on the vehicle and software.
Review HOV and lane-change preferences while parked
Check the manual displayed in your car for the relevant Use HOV Lanes setting. Tesla’s FSD instructions document a separate HOV preference and speed profiles that affect lane-change behaviour where supported. Review the controls for your installed version rather than copying another owner’s menu path.
Allowing HOV use is permission to consider that lane, not a promise to remain there. Check the next navigation instruction and the feature’s lane-change settings. Route and speed preferences can be relevant questions to investigate; they do not establish why a particular manoeuvre happened.
Take responsibility for the actual manoeuvre
Monitor signs, road markings and surrounding traffic. Intervene when a proposed lane change is unsafe or inappropriate, using the cancellation method in your car’s manual. Do not allow a driving-assistance system to cross a prohibited buffer because the navigation line suggests it.
If the behaviour repeats, note the road and interchange, software version, active feature, HOV preference and nearby navigation instruction after stopping safely. Those details make a useful report; do not adjust menus or record notes while driving. Our FSD driver-responsibility guide explains the supervision boundary.
Keep a phone fixed and loose items secured before setting off. For compatible refreshed Model 3 and Model Y interiors, compare the magnetic phone mount and under-screen organizer; check exact fit and set everything up while parked.
