Hardware 4 is central to many Tesla owners’ expectations for future FSD updates. But owning HW4 does not, by itself, guarantee that your car will gain unsupervised driving or never need a hardware change.
A development target is not a delivered capability or a guaranteed owner entitlement. A claim that HW4 will never need an upgrade requires a clear commitment about the feature, operating conditions and hardware covered.
Separate today’s feature from tomorrow’s ambition
Tesla’s FSD support guidance says currently enabled features require active driver supervision. Availability varies with hardware, software, configuration and region.
Tesla’s Q1 2026 update described software advances as progress toward eventually deploying unsupervised autonomy on customer-owned vehicles. It did not turn that objective into a universal no-upgrade guarantee for HW4 owners.
What the HW3 comparison means for a purchase
HW3 and HW4 are different hardware generations, so an update offered to one vehicle is not evidence that it will reach another. We have not verified a universal HW3 retrofit timetable, price or eligibility policy in the sources supporting this article.
Before buying a vehicle or paying for a software option, confirm the installed computer, the features currently enabled on that specific car and the terms Tesla actually offers your account. Give future autonomy an uncertain value in the purchase decision, rather than treating it as guaranteed equipment.
