Make charging work first.

Identify where you will usually charge and what it costs. If you need a home installation, get a quote before setting your vehicle budget. Confirm the car’s connector and any adapter requirements for the charging networks you expect to use.

Look beyond the sticker.

Compare the purchase price alongside financing, insurance, electricity, tires and home charging. Use your own annual distance and energy prices rather than assuming every EV will cost the same to run.

Request the full written purchase price, including taxes and fees, and an insurance quote for the exact model before you commit.

Ask for the evidence.

For a new EV, confirm the exact specification, delivery timing and warranty start date. For a used EV, request service and battery repair records, check remaining warranty coverage and arrange an independent inspection.

Plan for your harder days.

Consider your longest routine trip, winter conditions, highway driving and cargo needs. Review charging stops along that route and test the vehicle’s space and comfort before committing.

Build in charging flexibility for the trips you take regularly. A larger battery or all-wheel drive may be useful, but compare the extra purchase cost with your actual needs.
